TEN TOES OVER THE NOSE
LONGBOARD SURF COACHING
Technical longboard coaching in Nosara and online, from first cross-steps through to competition preparation.
Longboarding is not just about learning to walk the board. Progress comes from understanding positioning, trim, speed, turning, wave choice and how each part of the ride sets up what comes next.
At Ten Toes, we break those skills down clearly and coach them in context.
For some surfers, that means learning to cross-step for the first time. For others, it means setting up better noserides, improving cutbacks, controlling the board from the tail or refining advanced manoeuvres for competition.
We coach longboarders in person in Nosara, Costa Rica, and online through detailed video analysis.
WHAT WE WORK ON
Depending on your level and goals, coaching can include:
-
angled take-offs and positioning
-
trim and speed control
-
cross-stepping
-
noseride setup
-
hang fives and hang tens
-
stalls and faded take-offs
-
cutbacks and roundhouses
-
white-water climbs and finishing turns
-
drop-knee turns
-
advanced bottom turns and off-the-lips
-
noseride variations
-
wave selection and decision-making
-
competition preparation and heat strategy
-
judging criteria and scoring potential
We work through a clear longboard progression framework, but adapt the focus to your current level, goals and the conditions.
FROM FIRST CROSS-STEPS TO COMPETITION SURFING
We coach longboarders across a wide range of levels.
You might be learning to move your feet for the first time, trying to make your cross-step more consistent, working out why your noserides are not setting up properly or refining advanced manoeuvres for competition.
The same approach applies at every level: identify what is limiting the surfer, explain why it is happening and give them something clear to work on next.
COMPETITION COACHING
For competitive longboarders, the focus becomes more specific.
We can work on heat strategy, wave selection, priority and time management, manoeuvre choice, judging criteria and how to maximise scoring potential from the waves available.
We also look closely at execution. Completing a manoeuvre is only part of the picture. Control, difficulty, positioning in the critical part of the wave, style and flow all influence how a ride is judged.
Coaching can also focus on more technical competitive skills, including advanced noseride variations, drop-knee turns, laybacks, grab-rail turns, steering from the nose and more technical use of the whole board.
LONGBOARD COACHING EXPERIENCE
Ten Toes founder Tommy Potterton is also a founding member of LongboardSessions.com, a longboard coaching platform built around a structured progression system from beginner through to competitive surfing.
That same technical approach influences how we coach longboarders at Ten Toes, whether you are working on your first cross-step or preparing for competition.
We have coached everyone from recreational surfers to national champions, international competitors and other longboard coaches.
Surfers we have worked with include:
-
Anne Lisa Albers, three-time Dutch Longboard Champion
-
Lisa Boos, German Longboard Champion and national-team surfer
-
Delilah Hutchins, competitive longboarder and ALAS event winner
-
Shae Bradley, MexiLog Fest quarterfinalist
-
Taylor Bradley, competitive longboarder with MexiLog Fest and WSL experience
-
Lydia Ricard, Team Canada longboarder and ISA World Longboard Championship competitor
You do not need to compete to benefit from that level of coaching. We use the same technical approach whether you are learning to move your feet for the first time or refining a competition-level noseride.
IN NOSARA OR ONLINE
If you are in Nosara, coaching can combine in-water feedback, HD video and theory.
If you are elsewhere in the world, send us footage of your surfing and we can work through it online, analysing positioning, movement, timing and decision-making wave by wave.
Longboarding is particularly well suited to video analysis because the visible mistake is often not where the problem started.
A missed noseride, for example, may have been decided by the wave choice, take-off angle, trim line or setup turn several seconds earlier.
That is what we look for.
